Neat Old Cookbooks at Barntiques

This recipe pamphlet is form 1934.
It was given out by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
"Food and Marketing helps for the Homemaker"

I love had written recipes. This old cookbook binder is full of old recipes like this one for Black Walnut Cake. I just love that someone thought this recipe was so special to take the time to hand write it down. I grew up on Black Walnuts. They are native to Iowa and are a treasured commidity any homemaker who appreciates their special flavor.

First Days in School A Primer 1899

These are a few pages of new wonderful primer school book that I got today. It's copyrighted 1899.

I love this quote. We can only image what child may have had this book on his or her first day of school in the one room school house. If only the book could talk. Just think of who this book taught to read. What did they go on to become. We can only wonder......

I'm Ready for Spring ...How about You?

This is an older picture of my son in his gardening apron.
He was always my right hand man in the garden.
Now he's a sophomore at the University of Iowa. I know he's changed a little since this was taken. He's now 6' 6"!!!!
Bring on Spring!!!!!!!

What I love about antiques is the Who's ??

Happy Valentine's Day From Barntiques Antique Mall

Remember exchanging Valentine during school? We would make boxes and decorate them. During recess we could put our valentines in every one's box. One year my Valentine's box was in the shape of a pig made out of an old beach bottle.

Barntiques Interior Barn is Getting a Facelift

The interior of Barntiques Antique Mall is getting a makeover.
For years it has been storage and before that home to hay, cows, manure... farm stuff.
We're excited for the possibilities it has to offer.... Barn Dances, Flea Markets, Seminars, BBQ's, Halloween Parties, Youth group get togethers, etc.
The beams in this old barn are hand hewn walnut trees native to this farm.
We're not exactly sure of the barn's age, but we're guessing it was built around the turn of the century.

Royal Baking Powder... Absolutely Pure

Royal, a strictly pure, cream of tartar baking powder. The tests made by the government chemists show that Royal Baking Powder is of the highest efficiency and usefulness as a leavening agent: that is does not contain alum, ammonia, or lime and is absolutely pure. The official test by the various State Food commissions, Boards of health, and official analysts show no other baking powder so pure, strong, and healthful.. Quoted from a 1890's Royal Baking Powder brochure.

1940's Child's School Books

This is a great little story from a 1940's children's school book.

I love this part... Bob and Nancy came. You know it's an old book, Nancy is not a very popular name now. Of course I'm hoping for a comeback like some other older names like Maggie, Grace and Elli. I love the old graphics, from these children's books. They are so sweet and inncocent. Snow is on it's way for the next three days. I'll just be happy like these kids and maybe I'll have Bob over and we can make a snowman.
